Really disappointing as clothes do not come out smelling or looking clean despite following the instructions. Perhaps it's the hard water in my area?

I followed the instructions, detoxed the machine and ran a small load on 60° wash. The clothes came out smelling kind of neutral in the first couple of washes but shortly afterwards came out just smelling like they'd been swished around in some water and nothing else. Smell aside, it's just useless at getting out basic stains - fresh mud on my little ones school trousers - didn't touch it. Grease and a fresh red wine stain - no chance (I get these are notoriously difficult stains but my regular washing powder never really struggled).
